Assignments:
- Write a 1000 word essay on the importance of Biblical preaching. Utilize the Biblical Preaching Handbook.
- Provide three 500 word analyses of each sermon read. Be sure to take note of structure, exegesis, application and style. Also explain what you learned personally in examining each sermon. Sermons are available from Chapel Library.
- Write a 500 word evaluation on any contemporary sermon of your choice.
- Write a 500 word explanation of the historical background of your sermon text. See chapter 8 (pages 42-45) in the Biblical Preaching Handbook (BPH). Refer to the Free Digital Resources links on page 103 of BPH to help research the background (Also, refer to the links above). See the example on Pages 69-71 of BPH.
- Write a 500 word explanation of the literary context of your passage. See chapter 7 (pages 35-38) and Chapter 8 (pages 39-42, 45) in the Biblical Preaching Handbook. Also see the example on Page 69 of BPH.
- Write out 15 observations of your sermon text. Reference chapter 9 (pages 47-64) in the Biblical Preaching Handbook to complete this assignment. Also see the example of observations in chapter 11 (pages 71-72).
- Write a full manuscript for an original expositional sermon of your own (2000 - 3000 words). Clearly state your text, have an Introduction which highlights the Theme of your Sermon. You can use a story or present a problem which demands a solution. Use the tools of exegesis found in the Biblical Preaching Handbook, and then use the guidelines for writing out a sermon manuscript, also found in the Biblical Preaching Handbook. Write out the body of your sermon. End with application and concluding remarks.
- Preach your sermon and write a 300-word report on what you learned about preparation and presentation. Include any feedback you received from the congregation.
